Retired Garda Commissioner involved in fraud being protected because he is claiming memory loss, corruption beyond belief
Ex-garda ‘not fit for interview’ over EU training fund transfers
A retired garda who is the subject of a long-running inquiry by
the garda ombudsman cannot be interviewed after being diagnosed with a medical
condition that affects his memory.
Legal representatives for the retired garda have told the Garda
Siochana Ombudsman Commission (Gsoc) that their client has been diagnosed with
a condition that adversely affects his memory and the reliability of any
evidence he may offer.
The retired officer was previously interviewed by Gsoc and
denied any wrongdoing. The force’s ombudsman is due to interview other
witnesses in the coming weeks.
Gsoc is investigating what became of funds provided by Cepol,
the EU’s police training agency, to cover the cost of specialist courses for
gardai.
It emerged that some of the money was transferred from S
t Raphaels Garda Credit union into his own personal bank account
